Whole30 Days 1-5

I'm going to keep my food journal here in hopes that I'll keep up with it better. It's mostly for my own reference, but I'll add pics & recipes when I can. I can't do scales or measurements while on Whole30, but I've gained back a bunch of weight and am starting out at 170 pounds.

Sunday was day 1! I postponed it a couple of days because, after several years of many family members searching, an aunt finally found my Grandma's cinnamon roll recipe and sent it my way. I knew that I wouldn't be able to sit on that for 30 days, so I had to make them over the weekend. No regrets!

I've definitely been having some headache/nausea/lack of energy issues, but I think more of that is due to a broken/absessed tooth rather than Whole30. I saw the dentist Monday and got antibiotics and pain pills (I've been trying not to take the latter unless really necessary).

The girls' day camp started this week, and Maya's going this year as well(!), so Josh and I have been trying to get a lot of farm/yard work and house cleaning done while they're gone. We've stayed pretty busy and productive, and I think I was really overdoing myself in the heat with the antibiotics, so I'm not as on top of what symptoms are food related or not. I really tired out and fell asleep missing meals a couple of times, which I need to watch out for. I really need to stick to the food template. Things are evening out health-wise, and I know how much I can accomplish in a day without over-working myself, so I think I'm getting balanced out with the new routine.

So on to the log, and I'm including recipes and pics where I can. (I apologize in advance for the quality of the pics, but my camera broke so I'm stuck with cell phone pics.) I will say that I was really disappointed with the zucchini and cauliflower soups that I pre-made ahead of time. They were really good fresh off the stove, but I did not care for either after they'd been put away in the fridge. A real waste there. :/ And though I don't list it, I always have 2-3 cups of coffee with almond milk in the morning and drink lemon water for the rest of the day. I also ate a few fruit leathers while doing hard work outside, since I had not really approached it with pre- and post-workout meals. I'll do that in the future!

Day 1- Sunday, June 14

Health - Headache in the afternoon, bad nausea as the evening progressed

Breakfast – Avocado chicken salad (with shallots, red bell pepper, and lime) and Silky Gingered Zucchini Soup, which was not as good as I hoped after sitting in the fridge a day or two.

Lunch – Veggie Hash (sweet potato, potato, carrot, green bell pepper, broccoli, zucchini, kale, portobello, and garlic) topped with avocado & two over-medium eggs.

Dinner – Josh made me a huge venison steak, but by this time I was extremely nauseated. I felt awful! I don't know if it was detox or my tooth, had two bites and couldn't handle it.

Day 2 – Monday, June 15

Health – Saw dentist about my tooth first thing in the a.m., so I didn't get breakfast until about 10:30. Took my abx and did garden work, which really wiped out all my energy and made the headache infinitely worse. Fell asleep early without dinner.

Breakfast – Leftover chicken salad

Lunch – Venison steak with peppers & onions, portobello mushroom, ½ avocado w/EVOO and crushed red pepper, with raspberries and blackberries.

Day 3 – Tuesday, June 16

Health – Same as yesterday, but overdid myself with hours of hiking in the woods looking for our lost dog. (We never found him, I'm sad to say.)

Breakfast – Chicken breast, avocado, and Paleo Golden Cauliflower Soup (which I threw away quite a bit of, because it just tasted funny after sitting in the fridge.)

Lunch – Venison steak w/peppers & onions, tomato and green olive salad.

Dinner – Too exhausted to even stand, I just had 3 hardboiled eggs that Josh had to bring me, then I passed out.

Day 4 – Wednesday, June 17

Health – The antibiotics had kicked in enough, &/or the detox was over, and I'm feeling much better. Took an easy day since we'd really been overdoing ourselves Monday & Tuesday. Josh had to work the evening shift, so I hung out in town reading a book until time to get the girls from camp. Was really hot, but didn't get so sick in the evening. Just tiredness hit me all the sudden at 6 pm.

Breakfast: Veggie hash with 3 over-medium phoenix eggs (smaller) & almonds.

Lunch: Salad with romaine lettuce, spinach, carrot, mushrooms, tomato, green olives, parsley, crushed rosemary, 2 hardboiled eggs, and lemon juice for dressing.

Dinner: The girls had leftover pizza and I was really tired, so I just munched on some salted almonds and fell asleep early.

Day 5 – Thursday, June 18

Health – So far feeling really good today. Taking a break yesterday was a good idea. We did a lot of work around the house today, but I've felt awesome and full of energy all day. It's a rainy day, too, so not nearly as hot as it's been. I think that's a big part of it too.

Breakfast – Skipped breakfast. I'd had to stop at the store after dropping the girls off at camp, so I jumped straight into my morning productivity routine when I got home. I didn't even realize I'd skipped it until I started to make lunch. Whoops!

Lunch – Baked salmon; steamed broccoli (both with lemon juice); avocado w/EVOO, salt, and red pepper flakes; spinach salad with shallot, raspberries, blackberries, and balsamic vinegar.

Dinner - Bison burger (made w/shallots, red & green bell pepper, jalapeño, flaxmeal) on portobello bun with avocado, red onion, tomato, lettuce and homefries.

Curious about using the portabello for a bun. I want to try this (probably tonight!) How does it hold up for staying together? Or do you eat the whole thing with knife and fork?

Well, I'll tell you, I think it kind of depends. I've had them work well and not well.

This time did not work - lots of falling apart (mostly the burger itself) and dripping vast amounts of liquid. I'm not sure if this is because I washed them first (I do try to squeeze them out with a napkin, which helps) or because Josh cooked them in too much oil. If you just use a cooking spray (I use coconut oil spray) or do them on the grill, they work really well! And much tastier than a bun. Just be careful not to have too much liquid, be it water/oil/grease, so it's not a huge mess!
