or: I read because I love to, but I write because I have to.

My birthday is rapidly nearing, and I'm considering begging for a paid account. I'm happy with my journal, but I see people with all these massive amounts of icons, picture hosting, and voiceposts... I'm such a jealous chica. The only problem is, I know once I upgrade, I'll never want to go back.

Is it worth it? I do fairly well here, or so I like to tell myself. Does having a paid account really make any difference?

I would like to hear from anyone who has one. Is it good? For those of you who upgraded from free accounts - is it truly all that astoundingly better? I can't decide.

Anyway, I've also been creating an Amazon Wishlist. This was mainly to help Josh, but any of you who for some reason feel like gifting me on my birthday, please feel free to look it up. Name: Reiki Doula ; Email: Yajolimyr@yahoo.com . I was probably the last person in the world to start cruising Amazon. I warn you - my wishlist quickly got extensive. I'm going wild on that thing. Books are a drug passion.

Also, I've been feeling that urge to work on my writing more. I used to write poetry, back in my angsty teenage years. Of course, I reveled in ripping each stanza from the very ethers of my soul, but I never really read up on any other poets. You can guess my mad poetry skill level.

Eventually I realized the error of my ways and began looking at the works of well-known poets - I fell in love with Rumi (you think?) & Hafiz, had a drunken affair with Sylvia Plath, checked out what that Maya Angelou thing was all about, and peeked in on James Dillet Freeman after I found my spiritual home at Unity. But I still realize that I need much more poetry reading if my poetry is ever to come to life again.

This has been on my brain a lot. I had a long, self-imposed writer's block. When I had Eden, I wrote a poem that was actually published, The Girl in the Picture (note: the online version totally messed up the structure). My midwife asks every time I see her if I've written any more poems, especially since I had Ivy. I feel guilty that I haven't. Then when I started thinking about picking it all up, suddenly everyone on my f-list was posting poetry.

Universal Nudge?

I want to start again.

So if any of you have great poets or books of poetry that need to be checked out, please suggest them here and I will either find them at my library or add them to my wishlist. In the future, I may create a poetry or writing filter, so be thinking if you might want on that. I need to do more reading first, and take care of a few other priorities, but this is definitely going on my goal list.

Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks for sharing. But, do you mind telling me why you love it so much? The best benefits or anything? I'm having trouble deciding if it's something I should do right now or wait for.

Cool! At least I know there's some interest, then. I used to mod a writing group, but it got to be too much for me when I was preggers and kind of fell apart. It's cool when you find a good one.

Hehe. I like Rod McCuen, Rumi, John Donne, Stephen Dunning & Edward Lueders [specifically Reflections on a Gift of Watermelon Pickle], lots more. Sometimes I go to my buddy google.com and just type in 'poets poetry' and browse links until something grabs my fancy.

Paid accounts. Hmm. I don't have a like or a disline. It's neat having a lot of icons but I find that I sometimes can't remember which one this keyword is for, or if I have that one loaded at the moment. You also have different styles you can use, as well, with paid account. You could check out the sponsored account option. It has more features as well.

Join some writing communities, poetry communities. Some are good. Pick active ones. You don't have to post, but most encourage it. Sometimes I just read and lurk. =P

Oh, a whole list of folks I'm not familiar with (sans Rumi)! Thanks so much! I will check them out.

I read about the sponsored option when it came out, but I LOATHE ads. I hate the idea of thinking some mama might come along and read my doula blog, flanked my Enfamil ads or something. NO! Not worth it. That's when I began considering a paid account.

My all time favorite book... Gift Upon the Shore by M.K. Wren. I also liked Gregory Maguire's series, Lost, Wicked, Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, I think there's one other but I can't think of the name. Or for the more literary type, anything by Philippa Gregory. Or for silly no thinking necessary scifi/magic type stuff, I enjoyed all of Stephen Donaldson's books. Then again, I'm pretty willing to read almost anything. :D

As for the paid account, I've been thinking about upgrading myself but don't really see enough advantages to paying for something that works fine (for me) for free.

I'll have to check out those books, thanks! I've heard of that Ugly Stepsister one before. I'll have to read it.

That's what I'm thinking. Still, if I can beg it for a birthday gift every year, maybe. LOL I am an icon whore, so it may be worth it. :)

I have a paid account just cause I wanted the icons -- so basically, I pay for the paid account so that I can pay for my extra icons.

But I enjoy them. :)

Hm, that seems to be the main reason. I know that's mine. I should maybe give it more thought. Maybe next year...

I like that a paid account means all the entry pages don't have the ugly blue bars over comments and look different than the original page.

May. 18th, 2006 06:42 am (UTC)
I never noticed! *Runs to fierceawakening to check the blue bar status*. Niiice. I noticed before when the pages looked like the original page, but I didn't realize it was for paid accounts. I thought somebody was much better at coding than me. :P

Ok, now I really am wanting one...

I've had a paid account for almost four years and I love it. I especially love the extra icon space (hence why I have the extra userpics upgrade as well). The photo hosting (Scrapbook) is awesome too, since my old host closed just as LJ's Scrapbook was starting up. Being able to post polls is also good, and I occasionally make use of the phone post feature (but they really need to get Canadian numbers for it!).

I say it's worth it. What is it, $25 a year? That's really affordable.

Oh man, is that all? Maybe I will get one. I didn't realize there was a pic upgrade. Good to know. I need to go find where they talk about all that - in the morning, after coffee.

I forgot about the poll thing. I would dig that, too. I doubt I want anyone to hear my voice, though, but yeah, I'd probably do it if I had the option.

I love the icons and customization options of a paid account PLUS the ease of use of the Seamus client (see seamus ... it's golden. No lost posts, very easy to customize and look at things before you publish... I recommend it. I haven't tried the voice post yet but give me time.

Don't ask me about books. I need the same 12 step program you do. Two suggestions: the library, and half.com can save you alot of bread!

It's also totally acceptable to put a blurb about your Amazon wish list on your user info... :)

Seamus - I saw that mentioned the other day and googled, but was overwhelmed by tech speak. I'll need to figure out what that is.

Half.com - twice today I've seen you mention that. I need to look! I don't ever order online, because we have no credit cards, but Josh's mom may let us if we throw some money in the account. Hence, Amazon. Love the used, cheap options.

I shall put a blurb - as soon as I figure out how to link to it! Ha ha. that's why I didn't link it in the post. I'm such a dork.

Re the paid account thing, I move between the two, buying three months here and there as and when I can afford. Just in the last week I've gone back to being a free user. I'll probably upgrade again when I have the cash. The thing I enjoy most about having the paid account is a toss up between the extra icons and the ability to post polls. Neither of them is impossible to live without though. If you can convince someone to buy one for you then go for it. You'll have fun with it I'm sure. :)

I was slightly amised to read you used to write poetry, and got published a bit, and haven't writeen anything for ages. It was another 'Oh, you too?' moment. I'd definitely like to be on a writing filter if you create one. There are a few poems on my LJ somewhere in the distant past, but nothing in the last few years. You never know, you might inspire me to do something about changing that.

Oh, you too? --- Seems like that's not entirely uncommon, at least among my friends. I feel bad, because having not read a lot of poetry, I know mine is totally less-than-stellar. Part of me is half-tempted to put it on a private filter where no one can see my abominations. ;) Still, it might be nice to have an online writing group or something. I just need to make sure I take care of a few things first, so I could have the time to devote to it properly. In the meantime, maybe I'll go back to scribbling on napkins and seeing if I can discover a line of substance.

Hey Amanda!

Happy early birthday. I would love to gift you but you see...I am terribly poor due to unemployment and I don't have a credit card and/or paypal account. :(

As to the livejournal paid account - I have no idea if it is better. I'm not much of a help am I?

I joined Daily Rumi. He was a beautiful poet. I would also like to be on your poetry/writing filter whenever you start that up.

Well have a great day

Hello! Thank you for the birthday blessings, but I really don't expect gifts from everyone. :P

I'm so glad to see that you like Rumi. His poetry really changed my life, but I found it at a time when I really needed to embrace the Love of the Beloved. It helped me realize that an intimate relationship with God was not only possible, but ecstatic! Amen!

I shall keep you in mind for my filter. In the meantime, we both probably need to write more in clan. *blush* I got so far behind in my RPGs when I got sick. I bet people are hating on me right now.

Yes of course! And thanks so much for the compliment. I'm glad you liked it. I wish the layout had stayed correct, but oh well. :P

So do you write poetry, or somewhat else?

(This is Theophanu's author from Night_Court ... )

I currently have one of those accounts that allows advertising down the side. A lot of times the advertising sets itself to my interests (SciFi/Fantasy books, and so on), and it's really not noticeable at all. At least to me. I get 15 userpics, which really isn't bad.

I'd suggest trying that. I know paid accounts aren't expensive, but hey ...

Hey, Pippa! I'm so glad you decided to drop by my little corner of cyberspace!

I understand what you mean about the sponsored account. I thought of that, but I have several issues with it. I mean, I loathe the look of ads, but something else bothers me even more. As a doula, mother, and birth educator wannabe, if the ads are tailored to my interests (which I would expect anyway), I would not be able to STAND it if, say, formula ads started popping up on my blog.

When they came out with the sponsored level, I thought of it and decided that it just wasn't worth it to me. But that's when I started thinking about splurging for a paid account.

Thanks for your input! Please feel free to peek in anytime. :)
