Health Buddies Update

It's been a while since we checked in! How is everyone doing?

For those who are new to the f-list (and there's several -- everyone wave and say hi), I started a Health Buddies project among my friends here in this post. We currently have a dozen folks who have signed up to encourage & support each other on our mutual quest to get healthy. Feel free to sign up there if you want to be added, and check out the journals of those who are particpating.

For a while I was holding steady at 150 pounds - 20 pounds away from my weight goal, but 49 pounds lost since having baby Ivy! After coming back from my Florida trip, I seem to be holding steady at 152. I've gained back a couple pounds, but I'm not worried because I'm eating more healthy foods!

My buddy ladysmith and her husband are health-conscious shoppers. Honestly, their pantry put me to shame! I was very inspired by the natural/organic/whole wheat ingredients they used. She even cooked me tofu that I actually enjoyed. So when I came home, I sat down and had a long talk with Josh about my goals and concerns. Getting the kids to eat a variety of foods - let alone healthy foods - has been a challenge. And sometimes when I do cook more healthy foods, Josh snerks and 'finds something for himself'. So of course Eden expects the same thing when she doesn't care for what I've cooked. I explained to him that I was concerned about our kids eating habits and health, and that I felt it was very important that we lead by example. I know how dedicated he is to exercise, but I pointed out that it's not doing much good if we're not using healthy fuel to facilitate that.

So my wonderfully supportive Beloved has agreed to expand our eating horizons. He even tried some of the tofu stirfry I made (which Ivy LOVED and would not stop eating). I've started doing a lot of shopping at Amazing Savings, which is a discount organic store. The health food stores around here are *outrageous*, which is why I never shopped there. I know it's worth it to keep my family healthy, but when you're on a budget, it's tough call between eating organic and eating all month. ~LOL~ Anyway, I heard about this discount store, which is out-of-the-way but totally worth the drive. I've switched to mostly organic & whole grain snacks for the kids and am slowly introducing new foods like tofu & tempeh, vegi chips, etc. and even found a chocolate soy milk that Josh & the kids love (8th Continent).

I don't know a lot about healthy foods, sad to say, or how to cook them. I've always had my 'standard' recipes that get switched up between frozen dinners & pizza. I really want to grow as both a cook and a consumer. I've joined a few new communities that I hope will help out. I'll be checking out the archives of one of my favorites, food_porn, and I joined up at eatingnaturally, naturalfamily, and bodyforlife (I started Body-for-Life before but never committed to it; I'm contemplating trying it out again in the future).

I've also checked out SavingDinner, which I learned about through FlyLady. There are sample menus & grocery lists that you can print out, so I've printed *ALL* of the sample menus and plan to try each one. If I find a good one for us, I may save up and buy a subscription. She has several choices for menus - Regular, Low-Carb, Body Clutter, Frugal, Crock Cooker, Vegetarian, & Heart Healthy. That's six weeks of new recipes to try! (Body Clutter is the same menu as Low-Carb, but with day-time meal & snack suggestions).

We're also getting out more. We went hiking/berry picking over the weekend, which the kids LOVED. Baby-steps, though, since poor Eden isn't used to climbing all over the mountain (and she had new shoes & got a big blister! Bless her heart. I had to carry her back out). We're going to try to get out hiking, walking, or biking at least once a week while the weather holds.

So that's where we are right now. How are you doing?

Only 8 pounds? What do you mean? That's great!!! I'm the same as you, with more vegis but not enough exercise. Let's encourage each other! I know for us, hiking was FUN for everyone. The kids loved berry picking. I also need to get back on track with my bellydancing video. That's one reason I'm thinking about doing Body-for-Life again - I have such a hard time sticking with consistent exercise.

Portion sizes are another thing I need to watch. I'm horrible for cooking something healthy & then having a big plate full! Talk about shooting myself in the foot. Thanks for the reminder!

wow.. good on you sweets! my own weight is just about topped out at my highest.. it's most distressing. One of these days, very soon, I will find my strength again and get rid of it. It's sad when you have NO FREAKING CLOTHES to wear because last time I lost weight I ditched all my fat clothes... cuz.. I'll never be that size again right? WRONG. *insert sigh here*

Thank you for inspiring me today. I think I'll take a walk to the outdoor market near work at lunch and stock up on fresh veggies and fruits. That will get me off my duff at the same time.

Oh man, I have been there (several times, lol). I'm glad to know that I've inspired you! Maybe I'll start posting yummy, healthy recipes when I find them. I definitely suggest checking out those sample menus from Saving Dinner. It comes complete with a shopping list and nutritional info.

Have a good walk! I'd wanted to take the kids to the park today & walk around the track, but it's been super rainy here. Guess I'll have to just put on music and clean the house instead. *pout*

Oh definitely! We have "move it, move it" time every day. Ivy *LOVES* that song "I like to move it, move it" that plays on the credits of their movie, Madagascar. We'll put the credits on and take a dance break several times a day. :-D

This is exactly what I needed to see this morning. Both hubby and I have been discussing "getting on the wagon" and do something for our health. We just returned from our family vacation and my 6 year old starts back to school Wed so it's the perfect week to start something.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Always my pleasure! I'm glad to know that the timing was so right for you! I just love the serendipity of the Universe. Let me know if you want to sign up as a Health Buddy (hubby too!) and I'll add you to the list. I'm contemplating making a new community of it if there's enough interest. I find it's easier for me to stick with it if I have friends who help hold me accountable.

I'm going to start working on ideas to get the kids more involved in healthy eating. I've found out that Eden loves to eat salads *if* I let her make them and shake the salad dressing before we put it on. She has a better chance of eating a sandwich if I let her put condiments on it, too. :P

Well, glad you're getting some good exercise in, but good job not pushing it. :) You need to start slow. I might try to get some information on the Curves thing. It might be a good way to help me find some lady-friends, too.

I'll defitely try steamed tofu. I couldn't believe how much Ivy was mowing down on that! I cooked it in the stir fry with chicken broth & soy sauce, like you did, and she had two little bowls of her own AND kept begging off me & Josh's plates. I'll definitely have to ask Christina for healthy kid-food suggestions. I want to start making smoothies, too, but I need a blender that works.

i just a postcard from curves for a free week for new moms! i thought it was really cool, and there's one about a block from my house right now. but it is only for first timers..luckily i've never been there before ^_^

D and i have been talking about getting more exercise soon. He quit smoking almost two weeks ago! and we have been trying to cut down our portions.

I'm so happy for your husband! Congratulations to all of you! I know how hard quitting can be...

Portion size is definitely one of my weaknesses, but more so when I *know* I'm eating healthy food. Like that excuses me to eat more. Josh is trying to help me out with that, but he's just as bad. ;) We keep reminding ourselves that a portion is only the same as our closed fist - so his is bigger than mine, and I don't have to feel like I'm 'missing out' because of that. :P

Let me know how the Curves thing goes for you!

I've lost ten-15 pounds in the last week... But not from healthy things. I got food poisoning and had surgery on my mouth.

BAH.

Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that you're having such a rough time of it. I'll be happy to hold you in the healing light.

Hope everything is well now!

I am afraid I have gained weight. The steroids I had to take due to the poison ivy made me feel starved for nearly a month. I am really upset. My doctor wants to send me to a weight loss clinic in Winston Salem.

I just can't seem to muster any energy at all. It is effecting everything even my ability to play with Eva.

I have got to find some way to break out of this.

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that! Don't let it get you down - some things you just need to do for your health. I'd be glad to help you break out of it! You're not still having to take the steroids, are you?

One thing that I've noticed is that after I switched to shopping for healthier foods (organics & non-preservatives, low fat butters & oils, whole grain breads/tortillas/crackers/pasta, etc...) was that I have *a lot* more energy now! (Frankly, I think that's one reason why I'm actually back on the FLY-wagon, lol). I'm also trying to drink more water, which helps both with energy & with melting pounds off. I notice that I personally drink more sodas in summer-time, so I'm trying to watch that.

When I'm feeling really bad about myself, I make it a point to do some spiritual replenishing. I've done a wonderful meditation where I went to my 'sacred spot' and met my Higher Self. It was very illuminating. She was everything I *could* be, and once I consciously contacted her, she said she would be able to help me more to reach that Higher Self attitude when I'm struggling. Maybe something like that might be helpful for you.

So I'm still not sure how far away you are from Asheville. Is it too very far? Maybe we could meet at a park in the middle for a play-date with the kids & a healthy picnic lunch!

Asheville is three hours away from Elkin. Meeting for lunch would be very nice!

No, I am not still on the steroids, thank goodness. The poison ickies have all cleared up.

I would love to buy healthier foods. Elkin is so small though, there is only a Food Lion here and their fair is none too healthy. There may be a health food store in Mt. Airy. I am not sure. I need a "Buying Healthy Food for Dummies" book.

I checked out the Fly Lady!! That sounds awesome. I signed up for the yahoo group.

I would love a copy of that meditation you did.

Any help is appreciated.

Oh, I LOVE your icon!

And I'm glad to hear that you're not on the steroids anymore. I'm sure that will help! And I'm glad you've signed up for FLYlady! Do you want to be my FLY-buddy? I could use someone to do it with and help me stay on track.

I don't have a write-up of that meditation, since it was just one I did on my own. I think I got the idea from the SDD Lightworkers group. They send out A WHOLE HELL OF A LOT of emails, so I get the digest and mostly skim through them until one calls to me. There's a LOT of good gems in there, and it helps me keep my spiritual growth at the forefront. I'll try to remember to write up the meditation sometime.

Maybe we could meet up somewhere in Hickory sometime!

And check out Earth Fare - I know they're our local health food store & they've opened several locations throughout the state.

Sure I will be your fly buddy! :D

Earth Fare looks awesome. The Boone and Greensboro stores are both about an hour away. I think I would prefer to go to Boone. It is such a neat little hippie town. Not as awesome as Asheville but still.

I will check out Lightworkers.

*hugs*

Cool! After seeing the improvement in both my energy levels AND the kids' eating habits, I know I think it's totally worth the drive to find more wholesome foods. Too bad you guys don't have an Amazing Savings out there - it's like an organic GO grocery.

And thanks for being my FLYbuddy! Just give me a nudge if you don't hear from me. I'll be logging my progress. And if you decide to join up at Lightworkers, tell them that you found out about them from Amanda/Yajolimyr. :D I got in through berryhappy.
